Nonlinear and statistical physics for adhesion phenomena

In this talk, we overview pattern formation of deformed adhesives, nonlinear dynamics in peeling adhesive tapes, and statistical properties emerged on peeled adhesive tapes. The experiment now we are focusing on is quite simple, just peel an adhesive tape. However, results obtained from this experiment are highly suggestive from the viewpoints of nonlinear dynamics and statistical physics. Based on the experimental results, a simple model for the adhesion phenomena can be constructed, and the essential point of this model is competition of asymmetric local and global interactions between bistable units, each of which represents gstickh and gsliph bistable states.
